This Sunday morning blog will be short and sweet: How to make a nice bowl of Matcha.
For the longest time, I was afraid to make my own matcha because seeing the whisk, scoop, bowl, and all the tools made SPECIFICALLY for matcha....scared me off.
But one day I faced my fears and entered a tea shop and asked for guidance in making matcha the Japanese ceremony way. Now, I will share my knowledge and hope that you will try to make Matcha yourself ! It really is an experience and worth the time.
Items you will need:
- Matcha bowl
- Matcha whisk
- Matcha scoop
You can find sets that come with the whisk and scoop. Sometimes you can find a set with the whisk, scoop, and the bowl.
- Matcha bowl must be warmed, so preheat bowl by filling it about 1/3 with hot water. Place the whisk into the water just to get the tips wet. Pour out the water and dry the bowl. Set the whisk aside.
- Use the bamboo scoop to measure out 2 scoops of matcha powder and place in the bowl. Sifting the matcha prior will ensure no clumps and a better matcha.
- Heat 70ml (2.3oz) of water to 160f (70c) and pour into the bowl.
- Take the whisk and briskly whisk in a W or M motion. Use your wrist NOT YOUR ARM, until the matcha froths.
